Blind 750-pound alligator seized from New York home, setting up showdown as owner vows to
Self-proclaimed owner Tony Cavallaro said he treated his pet alligator Albert "than most people take care of their kids."
Alligator Seized from New York Home
A 750-pound, 11-foot-long alligator named Albert was seized from a New York home this week, sparking a dispute between the state's Department of Environmental Conservation and the animal's owner.
The alligator, Albert, resided in an in-ground pool in the backyard of owner Tony Cavallaro's Hamburg, New York home. Officials have revealed that Albert suffers from several health issues, including blindness in both eyes and spinal complications. In addition, Cavallaro allegedly allowed members of the public to interact with the unsecured alligator in the pool.
Seizure and Custody
Albert was seized on Wednesday by the Department of Environmental Conservation in the interest of public safety and the well-being of the alligator. He has been placed with a specialized caretaker who will assess and provide necessary care for him.
Cavallaro has refuted claims of neglect, stating in an online petition that he cared for Albert better than most people care for their children. He criticized the department for the manner in which the seizure was carried out, alleging a heavy-handed approach with 20 agents in full body armor and armed.
License and Legal Battle
Officials have stated that Cavallaro's license to own the alligator expired in 2021. Cavallaro, however, contends that the rules around owning an alligator changed two years ago, and he was unable to renew his license in 2021 due to difficulties in contacting the necessary authorities.
Cavallaro has expressed his intention to fight for the return of Albert, calling for support from friends and those who love the alligator. A court date for this matter has yet to be announced.
This situation has raised concerns about the welfare and ownership of exotic animals, leading to a legal battle between Cavallaro and the New York authorities.
