The Cowboys will sign veteran running back Dalvin Cook, his agency told ESPN.

The Dallas Cowboys have added veteran running back Dalvin Cook to their practice squad, the player's agency told ESPN. Cook, 29, visited with Dallas on Tuesday and impressed the team with his workout.

With Ezekiel Elliott returning to the Cowboys after a one-year stint with the Patriots, the team is expected to use a committee approach at running back. Elliott did not have a carry in the preseason, but his workload was increased in the latter stages of training camp to get him ready for the season. Rico Dowdle and Deuce Vaughn are also expected to contribute to the running game.

Cook's addition gives the Cowboys a proven playmaker with a track record of success. Over the past five seasons, Cook has rushed for 5,238 yards, which ranks fourth in the NFL over that stretch. He has also caught 236 passes for 1,872 yards and five touchdowns.

Cook was a second-round draft selection of the Vikings in 2017 and is the third-leading rusher in Minnesota franchise history. He had four consecutive 1,000-yard rushing seasons from 2019 to 2022 with the Vikings, with his best season coming in 2020 when he ran for 1,557 yards and 16 touchdowns.

As a member of the practice squad, Cook is eligible to be called up to the gameday roster for Dallas' Sept. 8 opener against the Browns. Players are allowed three elevations from the practice squad to the 46-man game-day roster, but they would need to be added to the 53-man roster after that to continue to be active.
