Democratic House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries shared two words for Republicans who are looking to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.

Democratic House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., took to social media to criticize Republicans who are pushing for the impeachment of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. In a post on X, Jeffries stated that "Extreme MAGA Republicans are demanding a full impeachment trial in the Senate" and accused them of continuing a "phony political stunt" targeting Mayorkas [1].

The U.S. Senate is set to receive the House-passed articles of impeachment against Mayorkas next month. House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., notified Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., that the House of Representatives will formally send over the impeachment articles on April 10. Johnson urged Schumer to hold an impeachment trial "expeditiously" and stated that the House will present the articles on the Senate's return.

In February, the House voted to impeach Mayorkas over his handling of the U.S. southern border, with all but three House Republicans voting in favor. This marked the first time since 1876 that a cabinet secretary had been impeached. Once the Senate receives the impeachment articles, it will initiate the impeachment trial. Senators will be sworn in as jurors the day after the House impeachment managers present the articles, and Senate President Pro Tempore Patty Murray will preside over the trial [2].

It is highly unlikely that the impeachment trial will result in a conviction.
