The remnants of Hurricane Ernesto are set to embark on a transatlantic journey, merging with a frontal system midweek, and eventually boosting rain and wind in Ireland and the United Kingdom.

Here's how a former hurricane can reach Europe:

- The Jet Stream: Similar to a transatlantic flight, Ernesto will be carried eastward by the jet stream, a ribbon of strong winds in the upper atmosphere.
- Merging with a Low-Pressure System: As Ernesto travels, its leftover energy and moisture will be pulled into a separate low-pressure system located to its north.
- Impact on Ireland and the UK: This merging will bring rain and gusty winds to Ireland and the UK, particularly the northern and western areas, later Wednesday into Thursday.

This phenomenon is a regular occurrence during hurricane season. About two storms of tropical origin impact Europe each year, with northern parts of the continent experiencing a higher likelihood of being affected.

Impact Severity: The impact from Ernesto's remnants is anticipated to be minor compared to other former tropical storms and hurricanes making this journey.

Previous Notable Examples:

- Hurricane Ophelia (2017): Ophelia, despite losing its tropical characteristics before reaching Ireland, produced wind gusts up to 119 mph in Ireland and 86 mph in the UK. This was considered Ireland's worst storm in 50 years, resulting in three fatalities.
- Subtropical Storm Alpha (2020): Alpha made landfall in Portugal, marking the first known subtropical or tropical cyclone to do so in the country.
- Hurricane Leslie (2018): Leslie brought wind gusts exceeding 100 mph to Portugal and flooding to France.
