The U.S. men’s national team is expected to hire Mauricio Pochettino as its next coach sources with knowledge of the situation confirmed to FOX Sports on Thursday.

Mauricio Pochettino Set to Become US Men's National Team Coach

Former Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain manager Mauricio Pochettino is reportedly set to become the next coach of the United States men's national team, according to multiple sources. Although no contract has been signed as of Thursday morning, the USSF board is expected to approve the deal, making it a formality.

Pochettino is considered one of the top coaches in the world and his appointment would be a significant coup for the USSF. The Argentine manager boasts a successful career, leading Tottenham Hotspur to their highest Premier League points totals and a Champions League runner-up finish in 2019. He also won the French Cup and Ligue 1 in his two seasons at PSG before returning to London with Chelsea.

Pochettino's arrival comes after the dismissal of Gregg Berhalter in July, who led the US to the second round of the 2022 World Cup but was ultimately fired following their early exit from the Copa América. The USSF's sporting director, Matt Crocker, had been searching for an elite coach to lead the team toward the 2026 World Cup, which will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Pochettino's appointment will undoubtedly make him the highest-paid national team coach in the world, following his lucrative stints at Chelsea and PSG. The move also strengthens the USSF's commitment to building a strong and competitive program ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

Pochettino's appointment comes at a time when the US men's team is seeking to establish itself as a global powerhouse. With his proven track record and experience managing top-level clubs, Pochettino is well-equipped to guide the USMNT to new heights.

The 52-year-old manager has a few ties to American soccer, having coached current USMNT center back Cameron Carter-Vickers and former U.S. World Cup players Brad Friedel and DeAndre Yedlin during his time at Tottenham. Pochettino is fluent in both English and Spanish, making him an ideal candidate to connect with players from diverse backgrounds.

The USMNT's next match is a friendly against Canada on September 7th in Kansas City.
