There was one winning ticket sold for Tuesday night's estimated $1.13 billion Mega Millions jackpot, in New Jersey, officials said. It was the fifth largest in the game's history.

On Tuesday night, a winning ticket was sold in New Jersey for the estimated $1.13 billion Mega Millions jackpot, according to the game's officials. This marks the fifth largest jackpot ever won by Mega Millions players and the first time this year that a ticket matched all the required numbers to claim the grand prize. Prior to this win, Mega Millions had gone over three months without a jackpot winner, with 31 consecutive drawings since two tickets in California won on December 8.

The winning numbers for Tuesday's draw were 7, 11, 22, 29, 38, and the Mega Ball was 4. The estimated jackpot for this draw was the eighth largest in U.S. lottery history. The record for the biggest Mega Millions jackpot was set on August 8 of the previous year, when a single winning ticket worth $1.602 billion was sold in Florida. The largest prize in U.S. lottery history, a $2.04 billion Powerball jackpot, was won in California in February 2023.

When it comes to claiming the jackpot, winners have the option to receive a lump sum cash payment or receive the winnings in annual installments over a period of 30 years. Only winners who choose the annuity option receive the full jackpot amount. The estimated lump sum payment for Tuesday night's drawing was $537.5 million before taxes.

Mega Millions drawings take place on Tuesday and Friday nights, while Powerball drawings are held on Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday nights. As of Tuesday night, Powerball had an estimated jackpot of $865 million.

In order to win the Mega Millions jackpot, players must match all five white balls plus the yellow Mega Ball. Smaller prizes are also available for matching some, but not all, of the drawn numbers, with prizes starting as low as $2. The odds of winning a Mega Millions prize are 1 in 24, while the odds of hitting the jackpot are 1 in 302,575,350. Mega Millions tickets can be purchased in 45 states, Washington, D.C., and the U.S. Virgin Islands. A standard ticket costs $2, but additional fees can be paid to add bonuses and increase the payout for non-jackpot prizes.

The next Mega Millions drawing will have an estimated jackpot of $20 million, which serves as the starting point for the jackpot series.
