Sonya Massey deserved to be safe. After she called the police for help, she was tragically killed in her own home at the hands of a responding officer

"July 23, 2024: Vice President Kamala Harris released the following statement regarding Sonya Massey:

'Sonya Massey had every right to feel safe in her home, yet she was tragically killed by a responding police officer after calling for help. Doug and I offer our deepest condolences to Sonya's loved ones and join them in mourning her senseless and preventable death.

Our hearts also go out to the countless communities across our nation who, like Sonya, have experienced suspicion, distrust, and violence when seeking assistance from those sworn to protect them.

The disturbing footage released yesterday is a stark reminder of the systemic failures within our justice system, as evidenced by the lived experiences of so many. We have a long way to go to ensure true justice and accountability.

I stand with President Biden in applauding the swift response from the State's Attorney's Office and in urging Congress to pass the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act, legislation I proudly coauthored in the Senate.

Let us honor Sonya's memory and the memories of countless others by uniting to bring about meaningful reforms that enhance the safety and well-being of all communities.'
