President Biden made the shocking announcement Sunday that he would end his reelection campaign and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris soon afterward.

President Biden will address the nation on Wednesday evening from the Oval Office about his future plans, in his first public remarks since dropping out of the 2024 presidential race on Sunday. In a social media post on Tuesday, Mr. Biden said, "Tomorrow evening at 8 PM ET, I will address the nation from the Oval Office on what lies ahead, and how I will finish the job for the American people."

The announcement on Sunday that Mr. Biden would end his reelection campaign and endorse Vice President Kamala Harris took many by surprise. In his initial letter, he had stated that he would address the nation about his decision at some point this week. He has been in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, recovering from COVID-19 since Thursday.

Mr. Biden's decision to exit the race has dominated headlines, but he has not yet spoken publicly about it. His announcement was met with praise and lengthy tributes from many Democrats, including former President Barack Obama. Senator Chris Coons of Delaware, one of the campaign's co-chairs, said that Mr. Biden's decision "reflects the very best of who Joe Biden is." He added that Mr. Biden has always found strength and grounding in his home state of Delaware and that he speaks to what is best in the American spirit.

Meanwhile, Harris has already kicked off her campaign. While neither Mr. Biden nor anyone else can appoint a successor for the Democratic nomination, Harris has been working to secure delegates before the convention in Chicago, which starts on August 19. By Monday night, she had secured enough delegates to win the nomination. She visited the campaign headquarters in Wilmington, Delaware, on Monday and was greeted with cheers and applause. Harris will deliver her first campaign speech in Milwaukee on Tuesday.

The Harris campaign also announced that it had raised $100 million since its launch on Sunday. The Democratic super PAC, Future Forward PAC, also stated that it had received roughly $150 million in fundraising commitments following Mr. Biden's announcement. Mr. Biden's fundraising had previously lagged behind former President Donald Trump's, with Trump's campaign raising $331 million compared to Mr. Biden's $264 million in the spring.
